I have an adolescent great dane puppy that has not had her first heat yet that has an issue with acne. In the beginning it was mild and was controlled with strydex pads. It became worse and was put on cephelexin and that worked but after finishing the round of antibiotics it returned. I do not want to keep her on antibiotics so am looking for another way to help with this problem. From reading on the subject I saw that the immune system usually fights off the reasons for the acne so Im wondering if there is any proof that a immune booster may help with this and if there is a superior brand. I clean her face after each meal, use strydex pads and some 2% benzoll peroxide cream. I feed and water her from a metal bowl. It is mostly on the chin and muzzle but some are on eyes, body and belly. It isn’t as bad as it may sound but still there. I feed raw and use several natures farmacy products like cran c 3, mega omega and the digestive one that has probiotics and enzymes. I don’t want to over supplement. Maybe there is another person that has had this problem in the past that may even feed raw that would have a suitable answer for this.
Some dane owners use Colloidal Silver and they swear by it.

Puppy Acne
Q: Our Great Dane has bumps under his chin which sometimes bleed. What is it and how is it treated?
A: Puppy Acne (what he’s got) is usually related to what, how or where he eats. Feed ONLY in metal or porcelain dishes. CLEAN the dishes thoroughly with soap and water, and rinse well, EVERY time he eats (no free feeding). WASH his face with warm water EVERY time AFTER he eats, then DRY with a CLEAN terry towel/facecloth. PAT on a palmful of Gold Bond powder.
Also put about a Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in his bowl of water every time you fill the dish. Always clean the water dish with warm soapy water, and rinse WELL, EACH time you refresh his water (don’t just ADD water to the old). Clean Food and water dishes, and NO PLASTIC will help this infection (usually staph) disappear. Consult your veterinarian if the problem persists.

The new puppies started weaning a week ago. I got them the ‘Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover’s Soul’. It’s one of the best, non-garbage, foods that I can afford on a regular basis.
All has been well except one thing. About three days ago (four days after beginning weaning) one of the puppies has started throwing up the milk every time she feeds from her mother. I watched him like a hawk, and I’ve been keeping regular weight-watching. He eats his food just fine. He drinks his water just fine.
He’s not puking up his food at all not even after he feeds. It’s pure milk that comes out.
I’m wondering if it’s some kind of strange developed allergy he’s got or if that’s even possible in a canine. Should I just go ahead and try to stop him from feeding on her since he’s eating and not throwing up food or water? If I do stop letting him feed on her what sort of supplement, if any, should I give him? He’s playing and vibrant as the rest so it looks like his nutritional needs are being met. He’s probably absorbing at least a tiny bit of milk before throwing up the rest. Maybe it’s just that this particular puppy doesn’t need the extra vitamins so it’s rejecting it (like I do when I take too much iron).
Genetics won’t help me here as these are mutt puppies from my rescue that came pregnant. The previous ‘owner’ didn’t know she was pregnant when we rescued her, and couldn’t begin to fathom what sort of dog is the father. I know I’ll end up calling the vet tomorrow to make sure, but it’s late and I can’t sleep so if I can get feedback, why not try, eh?
yes happens all the time and the best thing to do is talk to a vet about using a substitute
